Each week, we share links to a few interesting or inspiring articles we’ve come across during the previous week. They’re meant to stir your thinking about marketing, communication and graphic design as well as conscious capitalism and the socially conscious movement.
Don’t we take design for granted? It’s so engrained in our culture, we sometimes don’t notice it at all. This article is a great read which breaks down design into its simplest term: “Using colours, letters and pictures to help people understand things.” We couldn’t help but notice that this designer has also battled the ongoing assumption from non-designers that our job as designers is to simply “make things pretty.”

The news that retail giant REI was going to shut its stores for Black Friday and give employees the day off so they could “head outside” got a lot of attention this week. In case you missed reading about this brave move, here’s a link to the Forbes article about it. REI is encouraging other companies to “take a stand against the commercial madness” of Black Friday. Time will tell if others will follow suit.

We landed on this TED Talk by Harvard professor Michael Porter again this week; it’s worth watching. In his presentation he talks about how he believes it is possible for business to solve big social problems and also be profitable if we “change how business sees itself.”
